How Hard Is the IBEW Aptitude Test? (Honest Answer from a Journeyman)

The Math Section Is Where Most People Fail

Roughly 70% of aptitude test failures happen because of math. Not because the math is hard — it’s standard algebra and fractions — but because:

• 33 questions in 46 minutes (84 seconds each)
• Word problems require translation skill, not just arithmetic

Minimum is usually 4.0 on a 1-9 scale. Competitive is 6.0+. In big urban locals (Chicago 134, NYC 3, LA 11), you basically need 6+ to get called from the eligibility list any time soon.

How Long to Study

Most applicants who pass first try put in 20-30 minutes a day for 3-6 weeks. The pattern that works:

• Week 1-2: fractions and basic algebra by hand
• Week 3: number sequences and mechanical reasoning
• Week 4: timed full practice tests
